Director of Development (F/T)
Opera New Jersey seeks a full-time Director of Development to be a key member of the senior management team working closely with the Executive Director, Artistic Director and Board of Trustees in gaining greater financial support and community awareness for Opera New Jersey. The Director of Development will participate in donor cultivation and solicitation of individuals, businesses, foundations, and government agencies; will oversee special events; and identify new opportunities to increase donor participation. Additionally, the Director of Development will be responsible for creating and implementing fundraising strategies, advocating with community leaders and outside officials for government grants and public support, and working collaboratively with a dedicated and passionate team to meet its annual fundraising goal.
Roles and Responsibilities: Work collaboratively with the Executive Director to advance the mission and goals of Opera New Jersey. Develop and lead the annual fund, cultivate and solicit major gifts, direct special events, enhance community and volunteer relations. Other essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Serve as the principal fundraising strategist and development officer for Opera New Jersey; Create and manage a program for the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of existing as well as prospective individuals, foundations, corporations and other sources; Primary focus to be on the identification, cultivation and solicitation of major gifts, supported by special events and volunteer involvement; Partner with board members and Executive Director to grow fundraising efforts to reach a statewide audience; Represent Opera New Jersey at community events, as needed; Prepare fundraising strategic plan with input from directors and Board members; Coordinate with marketing staff to ensure integrated marketing and development activities that enhance Opera New Jersey’s image and promote its fundraising activities; Oversee the planning and execution of benefit events such as the “Celebrate Opera” Gala and Summer Preview Celebration and provide direction and co-ordination for staff and volunteers; and Supervise the appropriate use of donor software, ensuring donor privacy, data accuracy and timeliness of reporting.
Skills: Demonstrated success in soliciting and securing major gifts from individuals, corporations, foundations and government sources; Knowledge of contact management systems, databases, research or other donor relations tools; Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills required; Ability to work as part of a team and motivate others; Problem-solving, research and analytical skills; Solid relationship-building skills; BA required with a minimum of 3 years fundraising experience. Experience in an arts setting highly desired.

Opera New Jersey is in need of interns throughout the year. During the school year, interns are needed in fields such as Marketing, Development, Special Events, Artistic Administration and Production Management. In addition to those areas, in the summer Opera New Jersey has a wide range of internship opportunities in various areas of production.

As a Summer Season intern, you will be able to network with professionals working in the greater New York and Philadelphia theatrical communities including the Metropolitan Opera, McCarter Theatre, New York City Opera, Lincoln Center Theater and more. You will work in a critically acclaimed, Tony Award-winning, state-of-the-art theater and be an integral part of running a festival opera company producing 3 fully staged operas with orchestra.
Most S ummer Interns receive free dormitory housing and a weekly stipend.
