Opera Residency Program

Opera Residency Program

Opera Residency Program
Grades 3-12
Fee: Based upon the length and complexity of the proposed Residency

Co-designed by the school representatives and Opera New Jersey, residencies can be tailored to fit any curriculum. Residencies may take place in a single day or span over to 10 weeks as part of the school day or an after-school program.

In the Opera Residency Program, students will learn about the different facets of the arts world and discover how each element studied is crucial in the creation of an opera. Residencies typically culminate with either an Interact with Classics tour (grades 3-8) or a student created production (grades 3-12).

In past residencies, students have done the following:

  • Studied how actors create characters and applied these skills to the social studies curriculum.
  • Applied set designer skills to their unit on the American Western Expansion.
  • Students created an original opera entitled Struggle, which dealt with issues of peer pressure, sibling rivalry and humiliation as they affect. The libretto and songs were written and composed entirely by students.
